A New Toy, A Card That Refused To Be Made & A Candidate For Darnell's April Boo Boo Blog Hop

Yes, yes, I know, before you say anything, yes the title of this post is very long!  In fact, the whole post is going to be very long, so, if you are in a rush, just skip through the pictures.  For those of you are intrigued, grab a drink, pull up a chair and I will explain!  Here goes.  First things first.

The 'New Toy', that is the cover plate used for this card.  It is Neat & Tangled's 'Graduated Stripes' cover-plate die and I wanted to try and use it before I put it away for another day and forgot it, you all know how that goes, right?

Then I set to and made this card.

Then I decided to make another card with the opposites of the first card . . . this was the card that refused to be made.  I have never made a card like in in my life (well, I probably had when I first started, but thought it was marvellous . . . come on, you know what I'm talking about)

The very first disaster was that I adhered the gold panel down slightly crooked and it refused to come up without ruining the whole thing (in retrospect that wouldn't have been such a bad thing, because then I could be done with it and throw it away), but no, I ploughed on, so I stuck it down firmly, deciding to trim it a little.  That was my next boo boo, I cut it rather crookedly, but didn't really notice it because I was busy trying to remove the glue that had squirmed it's way out and on to the front of the die cut . . . and there was the next boo boo disaster.  It wasn't coming off with my adhesive erasure, so I decided to try Isopropyl Alcohol (rubbing alcohol for my American friends) and lo, waddaya know, gold foil card, just happens to be silver underneath.

You knew?  Why have none of you told me?  Still I wouldn't take the hint that this card really did not want to be made and I soldiered on!

I finally git it together and hid most of the boo boos, but when I took the pictures, under the 'all seeing' eye of the light-box, I saw that all was not right.  The whole card has a 'wobble on' and there are still very visible glue marks on the foil.  So, hence. my candidate for Darnell's April Boo Boo Blog Hop . . .

Here for you all to laugh at . . . go on, you know you want to, are the rest of the pictures - in all it's hideousness - and thanks for sticking with it this long!

  1. Don't you wonder sometimes Hazel just how you can cut things crooked, get glue in wrong place, really feels like a WW3 in the craft room sometimes !!!!

  2. The one that went right went wonderfully right, so I can see why you were determined to carry on with the other. I'm just thinking, the booboos as far as I can see are close to the edge, or in the case of wobbliness, the edge itself. I wonder if something overlapping the edge, like more foliage or a die cut border, would recue it?

  5. Absolutely gorgeous first card and I love your honesty and your openness with your second card. I think despite it all you've made a pretty good attempt at saving it and it really doesn't look that bad :) xx

  8. Very cool cover plate ... what a fun new toy! :) Your first card is gorgeous, and like you said, it went together easily. Time to walk away. I know all about working with something and wasting a lot of time on it, knowing all along that I won't be happy with it in the end. Why do we torture ourselves ... it's only a little bit of paper. It's not the end of the world to throw it away and just enjoy the first make of the day. :) No matter what, your design is beautiful Hazel. xx

  10. Oh yes, that is funny when you realize later that you should have given up early on. That die does look harder to adhere down than some others, it is a nice pattern though! TFS!

  12. I laughed - but not because I find the second card hideous (because it's not) but when I saw the sentiment you put on there "you're loved"! As if you wanted to tell the card despite the trouble it gave you, and even though it didn't come out perfect, you still love it! And you learned a lot, like how to make silver foil card stock out of gold foil card stock... They are both very pretty and I am glad that you showed us both! (And entertained us with your story!)

  13. My boo-boo list is long and varied - I commit them all on a regular basis, sometimes soldiering on as you have, hoping to bring it to a point where a non-card maker might not notice (they probably always do). I'm still amazed at how beautiful your card is. Even my good ones often aren't nearly that lovely!

  16. Oh dear, oh dear . . . I read your tale of woe, but you're not alone. We've all been there Hazel. Your first card is a winner, and the second "boo boo" version is okay - we are always our own worst critics.

    Good on ya for persevering.

  18. I, for one, did not know that silver was lurking beneath the gold. It's false advertising is what it is! But I'm glad your epic fail turned into the little beauty. Nice job covering up the boo-boos. When I first started stamping many years ago I got together with a group of ladies once a month to learn new techniques and to try new things and we developed some crafty words to live by fairly early on. I will share these wise words with you: there are no mistakes in stamping! Yep, a boo-boo can always be covered up or inked over or somehow made to look like you intended that particular look all along!

  19. Oh Hazel you did make me smile! not at your disasters but because I think we have all been there.....and most of the time too!both your cards look ok to me....no I hadn't a clue about the silver being underneath the gold either.Well done for persevering!!!...I find if I can't just stick something on top I tend to give up with things now lol. You did a great job...and relax ;) enjoy your Easter too! Viv xx

  20. Well I am really sorry but I can't see any boo-boos/disasters on THIS one! I did enjoy the read, and had a little chuckle thinking "Yeah, Yeah, been there, done that". But what a marvelous save you made, and it's dropdown gorgeous! You covered all the 'challenges' so creatively and I'm gonna have to get the maker of the die you mentioned. (Oh I hope it's available here!). I'm so glad you didn't toss this one. And even if you hadn't covered up the 'challenges', I learn a lot from boo-boo-s that others make and manage to 'save'. Probably as much if not more, than from the 'event free' cards. Really well done Hazel. You're a treasure!!! Hugs & TFS

  21. Well Hazel, that is a long title! lol Your first card is simply stunning. I love the gold paper, the new toy die and those beautiful roses. Yep, a stunning card. As I read farther, I had to have a few chuckles because I have been in the same place you were. Who hasn't?!! Only I didn't preserver on like you did. So I'm in awe that you kept going! Good for you!! I didn't know that silver was under the gold, so learned something new with this post. Shiny papers are hard to work with because glue will show up so badly on them and won't come off no matter what you do. I love the foiled papers but you gotta be so careful with them, thus why I don't use them much. lol But I have to say that your card is so beautiful and you hid most of the boo boo's. I only see the little bit of glue on the right bottom corner which I think you could cover up with some more foliage. I love it myself! I love that you kept going on even when you weren't happy with all that was happening as you made this card. Well done my friend!! Hugs, Brenda

  22. Ohhh goodness you cracked me up. That is so my style, we could probably craft together and just console each other. I reckon it turned out okay in thinned and just squint thats what I do.

  23. I was told once by "someone" there are no mistakes, only excuses to embellish. Glue some days is not my friend and how can anyone glue things crooked. well I can't stamp straight. I need to learn how to use a stamp a ma jig.

  25. I applaud you for being so candid and self-deprecating, Hazel! This post was hysterical and I'm sure everyone who read it could have written it! You made us all shudder remembering our own boo boos and the times that we refused to give up! I mean, people, sometimes we have to GIVE IT UP and NOT persevere, haha!! Happy April Fool's Day and thank you for playing in my BFCBB Hop!! (Your other card is stunning!) Hugs, Darnell

  26. The gold is beautiful with this cover plate, Hazel! And I admire your patience in continuing on and fixing the boo boos! All in all it's not too bad. LOL, those are the cards I would send to my Dad. He didn't pay close attention and loved anything I made. Or let me think so anyway.

  27. This is some clever way to hide the imperfections - came out great!

  28. Ah, yes.....cringing through the entire description! lol... We all have those times when anything that CAN go wrong...DOES go wrong! Fortunately, if you get all those gremlins busy with their mischief on one card, you are usually good to go on the next 20 or so cards! :)
Love your beautiful gold (and silver) foil stripes!! lol...

  29. I can so relate...glue and I have a love/hate relationship. I can give you one tip that will help you in the future though...when you stick something crooked, use your heat tool or hair dryer from the backside to 'melt' the glue and the boo boo will peel right off. One of the best tips ever as I am forever adding things crooked!!! Carry On! ♥ Sue Kment

  30. Great card design! I can't begin to count the times that I tried to FIX something and ended up making things worse. See this stuff does happen to ALL of us.
